This is Father McGivney, the curate of st Mary's Parish in New Haven, Conn. In 1882, Father McGivney and a small group of men eatablished the Knights of Columbus in their church basement. Father McGivney saw clearly that both Catholics and the church face serious problems in the last half of he 19th century.

To resolve the problems such as anti-Catholicism, ethnic prejudice, under-employement and the lack of social standings, Father conceived the idea of an organization of Catholic men who would join together to support the following principles:
